Sibutramine belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-obesity medicines that can help you lose weight and maintain it.

It works by increasing the activity of two chemicals in the brain, called norepinephrine and serotonin thus promoting a feeling of having eaten enough (satiety) and reducing food intake, leads to gradual weight loss.

Sibutramine is used as a part of a comprehensive weight management program to treat:

– Patients with obesity-related diet and a body mass index (BMI *) of 30 kg / m² or more;

– Overweight-related patients and other obesity / overweight related risk factors such as diabetes or abnormal levels of fat in the blood.

Sibutramine is a central acting stimulant and is well absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract (77%), undergoes a considerable metabolism that reduces its bioavailability.

Pharmacological aspects of sibutramine
Sibutramine is a neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitor that helps increase satiety by inhibiting serotonin reabsorption by 73%), norepinephrine (by 54%) and dopamine (by 16%). Sibutramine was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a weight-loss drug for obesity treatment in November 1997.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Sibutramine is contraindicated in cases of:

Psychiatric conditions such as bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, severe depression, or pre-existing mania.
Hypersensitivity to the drug
Patients under 18 years of age.
Concomitant treatment with antidepressants or other centrally active medicines.
Hypertension not sufficiently controlled.
Pulmonary hypertension.
Cardiac lesions, coronary disease, congestive heart failure, severe arrhythmia, and previous myocardial infarction.
Infarction or transient ischemic attack.
Hyperthyroidism.
Closed angle glaucoma.
Problems of apoplectic attack.
Enlargement of the prostate gland with urinary retention.
Pheochromocytoma.
Pregnant women.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

SIBUTRAMINE can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most effects can occur during the first 2 weeks of treatment and become less pronounced over time.

The most common side effects are dry mouth and different taste in the mouth.

HOW TO TAKE SIBUTRAMINE

1 Capsule of 20mg of Sibutramine, every morning at the same time in fasting, with water.

Do not take more than 40mg (2 capsules) per day.

* The BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of its height in meters (kg / m2). People are obese when they have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 kg / m² or more. A person is overweight when they have a BMI between 25 and 30 kg / m².
